Mundu Neriyathum

Mundu Neriyathum is the traditional form of saree of Kerala's women. It is a two-piece saree which has parts as Mundu & Neriyuthum. Mundu is the lower garment which is wrapped around lower body and securely tucked into waist. Neriyathu is upper garment which can be tucked either in traditional way with the blouse or on left shoulder in modern style. Modern style of draping looks very much like Nivi Style.

Traditionally Mundu Neriyathum is of white or cream colour. It has a coloured strip at the end of both the pieces, which is called Kara. This saree is starched well before draping.

Mundum Neriyathum is daily worn by women in Kerala. It is also called Settu Mundu or Set Sari. For festive or ceremonial occassions Mundum Neriyathum has broad golden or zari border as Kara which is called Kasavu. This variant is called Kasavu Mundu Neriyathum. Kasavu is worn by all women of all age group during Onam.

There is a one more variant which is called Set Veshti. This has a mundu and a small piece of cloth to be worn as blouse. This saree does not have pallu or neriyathum.

Nowadays Kerala Sarees or Kasavu Sarees are also in trend. These sarees are mostly white or cream in colour like traditional ones but are single piece six yard sarees. It has golden kasavu border and completely resembles kasavu mundu neriyathum.

Here are some tips to preserve silk sarees for years:
1. Always refold silk sarees in 3months to avoid tear on creases.
2. Keep them in a dry and cold place covered in muslin cloth and always fold in such a way to avoid damage to the zari and let the zari be faced inwards to preserve its sheen.
3. As these sarees are worn only for few hours at a time, there is no need to wash it after every use, just airing it inside the

Kanjeevaram Sarees

Kanjeevaram Sarees are the traditional silk sarees woven by the weavers of Kanchipuram. It is referred as "Queen of Silk Sarees". In 2005, "Kanchipuram Silk Sarees" received the 'Geographical Indication' tag, the first product in India to carry this label.

Kanchipuram town is located in Tamilnadu of South India and is famous for its Pallav temples and hand woven silk sarees and even called silk city. As estimated in 2008, nearly 5000 families who live in this town are engaged in this silk business.

According to Hindu Mythology, weavers of Kanchi are the descendants of Sage Markanda (master weaver of Gods who is supposed to have woven tissue from lotus fibre). Silk is also considered to be the favourite fabric of Lord Vishnu.

Kanjeevaram saree is known for its vibrant colours, Zari work and durability. These sarees can be preserved for more than 100 years and become a heirloom piece. Every south indian girl will have this magnificient Kanjeevaram saree in her wedding trousseau. These sarees are lovingly worn by people of all ages.

The motifs used in a Kanchipuram saree are heavily based on the Pallava temples,
palaces and paintings. Moons, chariots, peacocks, parrots, swans, lions, coins, mangoes, leaves and many such motifs are woven into Kanchipuram patterns. Other common motifs include a jasmine bud within a square or a round frame. Another is Thandavalam where parallel lines run across the body of the Sari. However, these days one can see scenes from great epics, Ramayana and along with the Bhagwad Gita being used as motifs.

Weaving style of these sarees is also very unique. If the pallu or border has to be woven in a different shade then it is first separately woven and then delicately joined to the Saree. The part where the saree's body meets the border and pallu is often denoted by a zig zag line.

These sarees are available in a large price range depending on the quality of silk, design, and the amount of gold thread work in the saree. A single Kanchipuram saree can cost between 2500 INR to 100000 INR. The zari used in Kanjeevaram sarees is the gold-dipped silver threads. The heavier the saree the costlier it is and also more pure. A double shade will cost you more than a single shade and length and width of the pallu and border also determines the cost.

Saree For Your Body Type

Want to find right saree for your body type? Then keep a few things in mind while choosing a saree to drape.

Fabric: Light fabrics like chiffon, georgette, crepe, italian silk etc. stay close to the body and fits perfectly. Such fabrics give the nice fall and make you look slimmer. Overwight women should go for light fabrics. Cotton, Heavy Silk, Brocade, Tissue, Kanjivaram, Orgenza etc. are fluffy fabrics and volumes to the overall look. Slin and tall women look good in such fabrics.

Prints: If you are short then go for small prints. Bigger and bold prints make you look short. Horizontal strips should be avoided. Vertical Print gives you height.

Borders: Broad and bigger borders makes one look short. If you are short choose small and narrow borders or no borders.

Colours: Overweight women looks slimmer in dark colours. Dark colours make your skin colour appear lighter as well. If you are tall and slim pastel shades make you look good. Fair skin colour women look beautiful in both light and dark colours.

Draping Style: Drape your saree neatly and correct drape makes you look perfect. Neatly draped saree conceals all the body flaws.

Traditionally, women are used to wear a matching head scarf along with this saree style called Vastra. This style can be easily recongnised with its pallu and pleats.

Quick Tips For Saree Draping

Saree may look simple enough to wear but it's an art to place each corner, border and pleats skillfully and neatly. There are some unwritten rules while draping a saree which make it look perfect once you are done with this.

There are some quick tips to keep in mind while draping saree:

1. Always wear footwear before start draping the saree. It helps in ensuring the length of saree. Ideal length of saree is such that only toes are exposed and ankles are fully covered.

2. Petticot should never be visible under your saree when you stand.

3. Petticot should be tied little tight. Otherwise your saree will start sagging and pleats will come out.

4. Be careful about the length of the pallu. It should fall upto the back of knees. Too long pallu will make you trip.

5. First make the pallu pleats and then pleat the remaining saree. This will help you in keeping the right length of pallu.

6. Pleats should be deep enough otherwise it will be a problem when you walk.

7. Pin up your pallu and pleats. This will make saree easily manageable and avoid any wardrobe malfunction.

8. Pleats should be even, clean and neatly tucked. Uneven pleats looks awkward.

9. Settle the pleats once done especially while wearing starched sarees like cotton, organza etc.

10. If you are a beginner, then make someone kneel down infront of you to settle the pleats.

Introduction to Saree Draping

Saree is an unstitched rectangular piece of cloth which measures in length 6 to 9 yards. In North India and most of the parts of country women wear 6 yards saree. While in Maharashtra and Tamilnadu women wear 9 yards saree. And in Kerala women wear two-piece saree. In every state of India people have difference in language, food and in cloth wearing style. While we talk about saree then its fabric, weaving style, embroidery and draping style everything change with the region of country.

First we will talk about with identifying the different parts to saree…

Saree is wrapped around the body while making pleats to be tucked in the middle of waist with one end lying on any of the shoulder. The part of the saree that lie on the shoulder is called “pallav”, “pallu” or “aanchal”. This is generally heavily decorated part of saree.

While wearing saree, upper and lower side of saree is generally decorated similar to palla of saree… these are called saree border.

Apart from this when you drape a saree some parts of saree are identified like the image below:
So these are the sections need to be identified while draping saree. Now what all you need to drape the saree…

While draping saree you need following:

  • A Saree
  • Well Fitted Blouse
  • Petticot
  • Safety Pins
  • Saree Pins(Decorated/Simple)
  • Cloth Clips
  • A  Pair of Sandals
Saree has already been explaind. So we will know about blouse now. Blouse is usually a short top worn with saree to cover the upper body. Nowadays saree are available with matching blouse pieces. Otherwise blouse can be purchased or stitched according to colour of saree. Blouses are available in different fabrics can design. Blouse’s design increase the grace and sensuality of saree.

Petticot is a long skirt worn around the waist under the saree to cover the  bottom part. Petticot helps in tucking saree conveniently and neatly. Petticoat is usually made of cotton fabric. While wearing net saree it can be of satin or shimmer fabric to increase the grace of saree. Color of the petticoat should be according to saree's base colour.

Safety Pins helps in kepping the pleats and border style intact. It saves you from the falling of pleats. If saree  is properly pinned up then it will stay where it should be.
While selecting pins then make sure its tip is not rough otherwise it will create damage to the fabric of saree. Big and small pins both will be needed in draping saree. Perfer the pins made of stainless steel.

Saree pins are also known as brooches. These are used to secure waist pleats. It is also available in different colors and designs. These are made of plastic and metals.

Cloth Clips are used in draping while making pleats of pallu and waist pleats. For beginners these are really helpful. With the use of clips you are saved from pinning and unpinning of pleats. It helps in case of slipping of pleats from hand while turning the pleated part.

Last not the least is footwear. Although it has a very small role in saree draping but very important one. Always wear you footwear while starting to drape the saree. Because only then saree’s length can be kept properly.

So, keep these things in mind while draping the saree.

Happy Saree Draping!!!
