Maharashtrian Saree Draping Style

Maharashtrian sarees are unique in its draping style as well in its length as well. While usually we wear six yards saree Marathi saree is of nine yards. It is also called Nauvari. It gives an impression of wearing Dhoti or divided saree.

Maharashtrian Saree is not a common draping style. It is worn on festivals or on weddings by Marathi women. Green glass bangles, nose pin, bindi, gold jewellery and kolhapuri slippers make it perfect.

This saree is worn without petticot. This can be tied on cycling shorts or on tight slacks. There are variations in this draping style as well. Some women drape it simply and a part of lower border is passed between the legs  and secured in back, giving saree a dhoti look from back side. Then pallu is secured on left shoulder. While in other style border of pallu is secured on left shoulder first then central pleat is passed through the legs and secured at the back. After that the portion near the feet is is folded and tucked into the waist so that border is seen at front as well. This is said "Tying Konccha".

Double Drape

Mumtaj style is very elegant and popular but not much comfortable while walking. But if someone wants the same coiled look while not being uncomfortable then try the double drape. It gives almost the same look but saree is not that narrow fitted so that you can walk freely. Saree is twice draped around the body giving coiled saree look and pallu is secured at left shoulder without pleating.

Coiled Saree Drape

Coiled style drape is most commonly known as Mumtaz style. In this form saree is worn like a coil. Yesteryears bollywood diva Mumtaz popularized it when she draped a orange saree in this innovative style for song "Ajkal tere mere pyar ke charche".  Since then this style is very popular and has never been out of fashion. Actoress Priyanka Chopra was also seen in same style in movie " Teri Meri Kahani".

In this style only two or three pleats are made facing left and rest of saree is wrapped around  the lower body. Each wrap is kept 4-5 inches above the last wrap. And pallu is secured on left shoulder making narrow pleats.

This style perfectly suits you if you are slim and has a curvy figure. This is not a very comfortable style in terms of walk as saree is coiled two three times around lower body giving it a tight fitting but perfect for parties and occasions.

Scarf Pallu

Experiment with the pallu of saree and get a new look. Look at these images, how pallu has been wrapped around the neck and they just looking wonderful. Apart then look you will be free from handling pallu.

For this style, wear a geogette or chiffon saree (preferably) with no or small border. Drape in Nivi Style with pleated pallu and keep the pallu short. Wrap the pallu like a scarf around the neck and get ready with this stylish twist.

We can call it Scarf Pallu!!!

Coorgi Style

Coorgi Style is completely unique style of saree draping. It belongs to Karnataka state of India. It is also called Kodava Attire or Kodagu Style. Traditionally, women are used to wear a matching head scarf along with this saree style called Vastra. This style can be easily recongnised with its pallu and pleats. 

This style of saree draping is linked with the Great Sage Agastya and his wife Cauvery. The legend has it that Cauvery transformed herself into a river to serve the people. The sage Agastya tried his best to stop his wife  and while doing so her saree pleats were pushed back. It was from that time that the women wear their sarees in the same way.

In this style pleats are not made in front. These are tucked in the back and pallu is taken under the arm and comes from back to front and neatly one corner is tucked on right side chest border. Pallu is kept short. This is the traditional style of Coorgi drape.

Nowadays as women are confortable with front pleats and want to wear this style, some variations has been made in this style.So try this style and get a new look!!!
